1876 COVER rated 5 cents, from Connecticut, USA, via San Francisco, PMMS ship ‘ss Alaska’ to Yokohama, Japan hand-stamped ‘YOKOHAMA PAID ALL’ , redirected in Japanese by Japanese post office to Tokyo receiving domestic Tokyo c.d.s.. Sent to USA Geologist and Mining Engineer Benjamin Smith Lyman, contracted to Japanese Government during period 1873 to 1879. He was also an amateur Linguist and is known for his theory regarding a constrain in the spoken Japanese language which has become known as ‘Lyman’s Law’.
